AbstractPasturelands constitute the dominant land use form in Brazil, encompassing about 170 Mha of land and feeding the second largest commercial cattle livestock in the world. Therefore, pastures simultaneously represent a large source of greenhouse gases (GHG) and a major mitigation potential. As a significant part of these emissions are related to degradation processes, assessing how the vegetative vigor of these pastures vary along time is of great importance in support of public policies targeting a more productive and environmentally sustainable cattle ranching practice in the country. Within this context, in this study we evaluated, based on MODIS GPP values (MOD17A2H), the productivity trends of the Brazilian pasturelands. Our results suggest that approximately 9% of the pasture areas in Brazil are undergoing biomass loss, while circa of 32% present a positive trend. In spite the fact that these results need to be considered on a very preliminary basis, due to the many assumptions and errors involved, the model presented in this work should be seen as a feasible alternative for mapping the productivity and degradation trends of pastures in Brazil.
